Learning Nudge: Mask Dynamics
Welcome to week 4 of the program, "Return to the Office" for Costco.
As in previous weeks, we'll be using a Learning Nudge to demonstrate some of the common experiences, challenges and even some of the blind spots that can occur given all of the changes happening in the workplace. Once again, author and global inclusion expert Barbara Annis will share her insight, and provide some lessons to take away and build on in your own work life.
This week’s theme is about wearing masks in the workplace, and some dynamics that can occur that you may or may not be aware of.
Some of the key insights relating to this week’s topic are:
-Best practices when involved in a dynamic you're not fully comfortable in
-How a manager can lay the groundwork for a culture where the power dynamics are inclusive
#4 - Masks Dynamics Learning Nudge Highlights:
- Understanding what wearing a mask means for each individual in the workplace. How can everyone show empathy and treat each colleagues with respect and understanding. (Note: You may recall that we addressed empathy as a powerful leadership skill in week 3).
- Emotions Regulation. You'll remember from the Learning Nudge in week 2 on Emotional Intelligence, just how important it is to navigate emotions, and the concept of responding to charged situations vs reacting to them.
- “The Blame Frame” created when reacting out of frustration. The traps of reacting with frustration and criticism can compromised relationships in the workplace.
- Intervening in a non-blame way: An introduction to S.A.R.A.
- Relationship Triangulation: Venting to someone about a third person is an avoidance technique that creates what is known as a relationship triangle, or triangulation.
- Tools to move from the BLAME FRAME to the OUTCOME FRAME

Personal Reflections:
Before you start, take a moment to reflect on the critical leadership skills of emotion regulation and empathy, learned in weeks 2 and 3 of “Return to the Office”. What are ways/skills you've been using to show empathy in conversations with your colleagues and/or employees?
What ways do you use to navigate emotional situations in the workplace?
Keep these reflections in mind when watching the videos, and when you're going through the exercises for this week's Learning Nudge, "Mask Dynamics."
Watch the Video:
Watch the following scene featuring Zaara and HR manager Emma, as they discuss a conflict Zaara is having with her co-worker, Ben. Reflect on the challenges you see, arising from an email sent to a co-worker.

What do you think was the main challenge in the scene? Take a moment to jot down your thoughts. Is there a way that Zaara could have handled the situation differently? Now watch the video featuring Inclusion expert Barbara Annis to see what insights she can share on this scene with Zaara and Emma. Now that you've heard Barbara's thoughts, test your knowledge with the quiz below!
