Learning Nudge: Anxious Days
Welcome to week 3 of the program, "Return to the Office” for Costco!
Our goal this week is to continue to develop flexible skills for a flexible workplace in these challenging times. Once again, we'll be exploring a specific topic in the context of "Return to the Office." The goal is to get us thinking about some of the common experiences and challenges we face in the workplace, and also some of the blind spots that can occur. After watching the first video, you'll get a chance to reflect on the topic of the week, then review it with author and global inclusion expert Barbara Annis who shares some of the lessons we can take away and build upon in our own work lives.
This week’s theme is about choice and how individuals may not always have the confidence they need to make a choice that will protect their health or the health of their family, because they don't want it to impact their job and performance.

This week’s Learning Nudge Highlights:
- Regardless of their performance, all employees are challenged by making the right decision whether being at home and/or at the office. Keep in mind that making decisions in a state of risk and uncertainty will trigger levels of anxiety that may affect their performance at work.
- Women may have higher anxiety due to what is known as “female rumination”. Research shows women worry more, and when there are no de-stressing mechanisms in place, such as self-care and self-talk, the stress levels increase even more.
- When we deeply listen to colleagues or employees who experience feelings of worry, we can help to ease their emotional state and provide a sense of release.
- Empathy heals. Managers can relate to what employees are going though by listening, empathizing, and by sharing their own experiences relating to stress. Authenticity and transparency create connection. And connection creates safety.
Before We Start:
Reflect on the conversations you had with your employees/colleagues in the past couple of weeks.
How much time did you spend talking about what is going on in the life of the individual vs. focusing on work related topics?
How has it affected you to be present and empathize with your employee/colleague during those conversations? How has it affected the work you do?
Keep these reflections in mind when watching the videos and going through the practice of this week’s Learning Nudge.
Let's Watch the Video:
