Learning Nudge: The First Day
Welcome to this section of this program, "My Work. My Well-Being." We're now going to focus on developing flexible skills for a flexible workplace. I'm referring to the 'soft skills' we're all going to need to thrive in the new workplace.
As it turns out IQ isn't the only requirement in today's working environment. We also need to develop EQ, our Emotional Quotient often referred to as Emotional Intelligence.
This session’s Learning objectives:
Today's Learning Nudge is all about activating your Emotional Intelligence. That's why we're going to dig in to the meaning of EQ, and why it's more important than ever in the workplace.
What is EQ?
EQ is really all about understanding and managing your own emotions. It's about finding ways to build positive relationships with others. An individual with high EQ is generally more connected to their feelings.
They have high self awareness and an ability to recognize their own emotions and how they affect their own behaviors.
The are good at self-management allowing them to control impulsive behaviors, follow through on commitments, and adapt as the circumstances change.
People with Emotional Intelligence also have strong social awareness, and can pick up on the emotional cues of others.
They also manage relationships well through clear communication, and tend to manage conflict better than others. You can find links to some articles on EQ below this video.
In a study done at Harvard Business School, researchers determined that EQ was twice as valuable as IQ for determining who would be successful. I would encourage you to try out their Emotional Intelligence Quiz, using the link below.
In this section, we're going to focus on one EQ skill-set that matters more than any other right now in this rapidly changing world of work: communication! If you have ever worked in an office and then at home for any period of time, you know how fundamentally different communication is. Some people feel they're missing out on vital conversations that you get one-on-one in the office, or in face-to-face meetings with the team.
You may feel out of the loop, or that you're missing context that could impact the outcome of your work. In this section, we're going to explore the challenges relating to communication in this era, and provide you with some strategies for overcoming these hurdles. We're also going to explore communication barriers that can lead to conflict, or the fear of being invisible and not valued. And most of all, a lack of emotional connection.
In the next video, you're going to meet 2 characters in an animated scene that we call "Learning Nudges. The nudges are designed to get us thinking about some of the common experiences and challenges we face in the workplace, and also some of the blind spots that can occur. After each Learning Nudge, you'll get to hear from author and global inclusion expert Barbara Annis on some of the lessons we can take away and build upon in our own work lives.

Personal Reflections:
Before you start, reflect on your own EQ. On a scale of 1 to 10 what's your level of awareness of your own emotions. How well are you able to name them?
Watch the Video:
Watch the following scene featuring Teri and her husband John as they discuss her first day in the workplace after working remotely for the first 6 months of her employment. Reflect on the challenges you see, arising from an email sent to a co-worker.
Watch the following scene featuring Teri and her husband John as they discuss her first day in the workplace after working remotely for the first 6 months of her employment. Reflect on the challenges you see, arising from an email sent to a co-worker.
What do you think was the main challenge in the scene? Take a moment to jot down your thoughts. Is there a way that Teri's disappointment could have been avoided? Now watch the video featuring Inclusion expert Barbara Annis to see what she noticed in this scene with Teri and John, and what additional insights she shares. |
Now that you have heard Barbara's comments, let’s review the two aspects of EQ, only this time, focus on your own EQ and ability to appraise your own emotions as well as those of others around you:
